Jim Boyd 1942 – 2026
Biography
Jim Boyd was the steady, trusted voice of Boston mornings for nearly four decades, a WCVB-TV Channel 5 anchor whose calm delivery made him one of the city’s most familiar faces. Born James Lloyd Boyd in New York City on March 26, 1942, and raised in Harlem, he started in television in 1961 in the mailroom at New York’s WNET, rising to producer on the Emmy-winning ‘News in Perspective’ before joining WCVB as a general assignment reporter in 1972.
Over 36 years at Channel 5, Boyd co-anchored weekend, early-morning, and midday newscasts, and earned induction into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2012. After retiring in 2008, he finished the bachelor’s degree he had set aside, graduating from Tufts University in 2013, and took up background acting in Boston-filmed movies including Spotlight and Manchester by the Sea.
Boyd died on October 27, 2026, at age 84, after five difficult months facing multiple myeloma, survived by his wife Linda and three daughters. Burial details have not been announced.
