Christian X of Denmark

Biography

Christian X ascended to Denmark’s throne in 1912, commanding a kingdom for thirty-five transformative years during one of Europe’s most turbulent centuries. Born into nineteenth-century palace life at Charlottenlund in 1870, he would become the steady hand guiding Denmark through two devastating world wars and seismic cultural shifts that remade the continent.

Beyond Denmark’s borders, Christian X’s authority extended to Iceland, embodying the historical bonds between Nordic nations. His three-decade reign provided rare continuity during an era of violent political upheaval—a monarch who lived the impossible span from the Victorian age to the atomic era, witnessing everything from horse carriages to modern warfare reshape society around him.

When Christian X died in April 1947 at Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace, Denmark lost a king who’d bridged centuries. His final resting place at Roskilde Cathedral situated him among generations of Danish royalty, a physical reminder that he’d stewarded one of Europe’s oldest monarchies through history’s most volatile chapter.
