Biography

The drill sergeant who became Hollywood’s most terrifying tough guy, R. Lee Ermey seized cultural immortality with one volcanic performance: his role in Stanley Kubrick’s *Full Metal Jacket*. Playing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, Ermey unleashed a torrent of profanity and abuse that became the template for every screaming military authority figure that followed. That wasn’t acting—it was authenticity channeled through pure cinematic fury, backed by his actual Marine Corps service as a staff sergeant.

Ermey’s military credentials gave him an edge no other actor could fake. He parlayed that authority into a prolific career spanning character roles in *Apocalypse Now*, *The Right Stuff*, and countless TV appearances, becoming the go-to voice for gravelly command and no-nonsense gravitas. Beyond the screen, he was a proud veteran who brought genuine respect to military storytelling, never letting Hollywood sanitize the real thing.

The Vietnam-era Marine died on April 15, 2018, at seventy-three, his passing marked by pneumonia. Arlington National Cemetery became his final post—a burial ground reserved for those who served with distinction, a fitting honor for a man who carried his soldier’s bearing into every role he played.
