Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia

Biography

Friedrich Wilhelm II inherited one of Europe’s most formidable thrones in 1786, commanding Prussia during an era of radical transformation. The Berlin-born monarch ruled an eleven-year kingdom caught between Enlightenment ideals and absolute monarchy, steering the Prussian state through a period when the continent itself was convulsing with intellectual ferment and competing visions of power. His reign positioned him at the center of late-eighteenth-century European politics during one of history’s most pivotal decades.

From his ascension until his death in 1797, Friedrich Wilhelm II navigated the complex currents of his time as keeper of Prussian grandeur. He concluded his life in Potsdam—a royal testament to a reign spent in the highest echelons of European nobility. Upon his passing, he was laid to rest at Berlin Cathedral, a final honor reflecting the weight of his crown and the significance of his place in the long succession of Prussian rulers who shaped the continent’s destiny.
