Biography

A child prodigy who became one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated violinists, Yehudi Menuhin revolutionized what audiences expected from classical music performance. Born in New York in 1916, he was performing concertos by his teens and recording masterpieces by his twenties—a virtuoso who could make the violin sing with unmatched technical brilliance and emotional depth. His fame transcended concert halls, making him a cultural ambassador for classical music worldwide.

But Menuhin refused to be confined to the violin alone. He emerged as a visionary conductor, leading orchestras across Europe and beyond with the same interpretive genius he brought to solo performances. His restless intellect and artistic curiosity pushed him to collaborate with musicians from every genre and tradition, breaking down barriers between classical music and world cultures.

Menuhin died in Berlin on March 12, 1999, from bronchitis, at eighty-two. He left behind an unparalleled legacy—not just as a musician but as a tireless advocate for music’s power to unite humanity.
