Biography

Arnold Zweig commanded twentieth-century German literature with unflinching moral clarity, crafting narratives that refused to look away from history’s darkest moments. Born in 1887 in Głogów, Poland, Zweig emerged as a towering literary voice whose commitment to storytelling became an act of witness—capturing the turbulent convulsions of his era through prose that cut to the bone.

Zweig’s career unfolded against the violent upheavals that shattered Europe. While lesser writers retreated into abstraction, he remained steadfastly engaged in the written word’s capacity to illuminate raw human truth. His body of work resonated across literary circles, establishing him as an essential voice in German cultural discourse during decades that demanded courage and conviction from anyone brave enough to speak.

He spent his final years in East Berlin, a writer to the end, before his death on November 26, 1968, at eighty-one. Zweig’s interment at Dorotheenstadt Cemetery concluded a life devoted entirely to his craft—a legacy rooted in the uncompromising power of literature to bear witness to the human condition.
