Lucas Cranach the Younger 1515 – 1586
Biography
Born into artistic royalty in Wittenberg, Lucas Cranach the Younger inherited one of Renaissance Germany’s most prestigious studios and made it his own. Growing up amid the religious ferment that defined his hometown, he absorbed both the technical mastery and cultural influence that came with the Cranach name—then transformed it into a distinctly personal vision that would shape Northern European visual culture for decades.
For seventy years, Cranach remained rooted in Wittenberg, channeling the spiritual and intellectual currents swirling through this epicenter of Renaissance thought into his work. Rather than chase patronage across Europe, he deepened his engagement with the city that shaped him, building a career defined by commitment to craft and community. When he died in 1586, he was laid to rest at Stadtkirche Wittenberg, a final homecoming that spoke volumes about a life lived fully in one remarkable place.
