Biography

Prince Naruhiko Higashikuni was born into Japan’s imperial aristocracy in 1887, representing a lineage that would witness and shape a nation’s dramatic metamorphosis. His distinguished status as a member of the imperial family positioned him as a living bridge between Japan’s traditional past and its rapid modernization during one of history’s most turbulent centuries.

Living past 102, Higashikuni embodied an extraordinary span of Japanese history—from the Meiji Restoration through post-war reconstruction and the country’s economic boom. His longevity made him a rare historical witness, observing firsthand how Japan transformed from an imperial power into a modern democracy, carrying with him intimate knowledge of generations of change that reshaped the nation’s identity.

When Higashikuni passed away in January 1990 from heart failure, Japan lost a tangible connection to its imperial heritage and twentieth-century evolution. Laid to rest at Toshimagaoka Cemetery, his life stood as a testament to Japan’s resilience and reinvention across more than a century of profound cultural and political upheaval.
