Biography

Farrukhsiyar commanded the Mughal throne during one of empire’s most turbulent periods, ascending to power in 1713 at a pivotal moment when rival factions battled for control of the imperial court. Born in 1685 in Aurangabad, he inherited a dynasty already fracturing under internal pressures, and his six-year reign became a masterclass in navigating the treacherous politics of late-Mughal governance. Though his time as emperor proved brief, Farrukhsiyar held firm as the supreme authority of the state during years when the empire itself teetered on the brink of transformation.

When he died in 1719 at just thirty-three, Farrukhsiyar’s legacy remained tied to this pivotal transitional moment in Indian history. His interment at the majestic Humayun’s Tomb reflected his imperial standing—a final resting place befitting a ruler who, despite the constraints of his era, maintained the dignity of the Mughal crown during its decline.
