Biography

Leo Strauss was a titan of twentieth-century political philosophy whose meticulous approach to reading ancient and modern texts revolutionized how scholars understood the history of ideas. Born in Germany in 1899, he became obsessed with a deceptively simple question: what did the great philosophers actually mean? His intense, line-by-line interpretations of Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, and Hobbes weren’t dry academic exercises—they were excavations into timeless questions about justice, freedom, and power that still matter today.

What made Strauss legendary wasn’t just his scholarship; it was his magnetic influence on students. Teaching first in Chicago and later at the University of Maryland in Annapolis, he attracted devoted followers who saw in his work a counterweight to modern intellectual trends. His conviction that studying political philosophy wasn’t nostalgic but necessary struck a chord across generations, spawning what became known as “Straussian” thought—a whole intellectual movement.

Strauss spent his final years in Annapolis, publishing prolifically until his death in 1973. Though he left no single monumental tome, his dozens of books and articles, combined with the scholars he trained, secured his place as one of the most consequential thinkers of the modern era.
