Ernest Bloch 1880 – 1959
Biography
Swiss-born composer Ernest Bloch carved out a revolutionary career translating the raw intensity of his artistic vision into orchestral masterpieces. Born in Geneva in 1880, Bloch refused to be confined by classical convention, instead crafting works that bridged European heritage with bold modernist sensibilities. His restless creative spirit eventually drew him to America, where he became a towering figure in twentieth-century classical music, influencing generations of composers who followed.
Bloch’s uncompromising dedication to his craft earned him reverence in musical circles worldwide. Whether composing intimate chamber works or sweeping symphonic pieces, he channeled profound emotional depth into every note, creating a body of work that transcended national boundaries and spoke to the universal human experience through pure musical language.
The legendary composer passed away in Portland in July 1959 at age 78, succumbing to cancer. He was buried at Agate Beach on Oregon’s rugged coastline—a fitting final resting place for an artist who spent his life pursuing beauty, truth, and the transformative power of music.
