Jimmy Johnstone 1944 – 2006
Biography
The pint-sized Scottish winger with electric feet and an even bigger heart, Jimmy Johnstone lit up football pitches with a style that couldn’t be taught—only witnessed. Born in Uddingston in 1944, Johnstone became a Scottish football legend whose skill, passion, and fearless approach to the game left an indelible mark on everyone who watched him play. His career embodied the golden age of Scottish football, a period when talent and grit defined the beautiful game.
Off the pitch, Johnstone faced his greatest battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurological disease that gradually stripped away his physical abilities. He fought with the same determination that had defined his playing days, but on March 13, 2006, the disease claimed him at 61. His final resting place at Bothwell Park Cemetery in Bellshill became a pilgrimage site for those who remembered the magic he’d brought to Scottish football and the resilience he’d shown in his final years.
