Biography

Roberts Blossom spent nearly nine decades mastering a rare double act: he was a serious poet *and* a serious actor, threading both disciplines through a career that spanned most of the twentieth century. Born in New Haven in 1924, he brought literary sensibility to the stage and screen, inhabiting characters with the precision of someone who understood language from the inside out. His dual passion for performance and verse made him a distinctive voice in American arts—the kind of artist who could shift between embodying a role and crafting a poem with equal authenticity.

Blossom’s work across theater and film gave him the freedom to explore human complexity through different lenses, while his poetry offered something more intimate: unfiltered glimpses into his artistic consciousness. These weren’t separate careers running parallel—they informed each other, each deepening his grasp of how to express what it means to be human. He was the rare creative who refused to choose between words spoken aloud and words on a page.

He died on July 8, 2011, in Santa Monica, following a stroke, at eighty-seven. His legacy rests at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, but it lives on through the performances and verses he left behind—proof that an artist working across multiple forms can create something that outlasts the body.
