Biography

Gregor Erhart carved his name into Renaissance history as one of Germany’s most commanding sculptors. Born in Ulm in 1470, this master craftsman rose to prominence during an era when German art was quietly revolutionizing European taste. While Italian Renaissance giants dominated the conversation, Erhart was busy creating works of stunning emotional depth and technical precision that proved the North had its own artistic voice.

Working primarily in wood and stone, Erhart developed a distinctive style that blended meticulous naturalism with dramatic spiritual intensity. His pieces captured human vulnerability and divine grace in ways that resonated across generations. Based in Augsburg for much of his career, he became the go-to sculptor for wealthy patrons and religious institutions seeking work that could move the soul.

Erhart spent seven decades pushing the boundaries of three-dimensional form, bridging the late Gothic and early Renaissance worlds. He died in Augsburg on January 1, 1540—precisely seventy years after his birth—leaving behind a legacy that established German sculpture as a force that could rival anything emerging from Italy’s workshops.
