Biography

Etel Adnan emerged as a fierce creative force who refused to be confined by a single medium or identity. Born in Beirut in 1925, this Lebanese-American artist and writer became known for her genre-defying work that spanned poetry, painting, and visual art—a rare mastery that established her as a singular voice in contemporary culture. Her ability to move fluidly between disciplines while maintaining a distinctive artistic vision set her apart from her contemporaries.

Adnan’s work captured the fraught beauty of living between worlds, translating the complexity of her Lebanese heritage and the immigrant experience into art that transcended borders. Her paintings and prose alike explored identity, displacement, and belonging with a lyrical intensity that resonated across continents. For decades, she remained a vital presence in international artistic circles, her perspective sharpened by decades of witnessing seismic historical shifts.

Based in Paris during her final years, Adnan continued creating until her death in November 2021 at 96. She left behind a luminous body of work that continues to inspire artists and writers grappling with questions of home, language, and what it means to belong everywhere and nowhere at once.
