Aleksandr Novikov 1900 – 1976
Biography
Aleksandr Novikov soared to the top of Soviet military aviation, becoming Marshal of Aviation—one of the highest honors in the USSR’s command structure. Born in 1900 during Russia’s revolutionary upheaval, Novikov would emerge as one of the twentieth century’s most influential air power strategists, shaping how the Soviet Union built and deployed its air forces during a pivotal era.
His ascent through the military ranks reflected both tactical brilliance and unwavering dedication to Soviet defense. Novikov’s elevation to marshal status—a distinction reserved for the nation’s most consequential commanders—cemented his place among the Soviet Union’s elite military architects, trusted implicitly by the Kremlin to modernize and lead aviation forces through decades of transformation.
Novikov witnessed the entire arc of Soviet power, from revolutionary chaos to superpower status. He passed away in Moscow on December 3, 1976, and was interred at Novodevichy Cemetery, the hallowed burial ground reserved for Russia’s most celebrated figures. His life embodied the dramatic military evolution of the twentieth century.
