Alexander Gretchaninov 1864 – 1956
Biography
Alexander Gretchaninov was a titan of Russian Romantic composition whose nearly century-long career made him one of the most prolific voices of his era. Born in Moscow during Russia’s golden age of culture in 1864, he spent decades establishing himself as a master of the Russian musical tradition, crafting works that would outlive empires and oceans. His creative output spanned the entire arc of the 20th century—a remarkable feat that saw him witness and musically document some of history’s most seismic shifts.
When political tides turned, Gretchaninov made the bold move to New York City, where he continued composing and creating during his final decades. Rather than fade into obscurity abroad, he remained a vital force in the city’s musical life, proving that artistic genius transcends borders. He died in Manhattan at ninety-one, having secured his place as a bridge between the tsarist musical world and the modern era.
