Biography

Yang Kaihui lived through one of history’s most transformative moments—early twentieth-century China’s seismic political and social upheaval. Born in 1901, she became a pivotal figure not through calculated ambition, but through her presence at the epicenter of revolutionary change. As the wife of Mao Zedong, she occupied a uniquely visible position during China’s most turbulent decade, the 1920s, when ideological struggles and internal conflict reshaped the nation’s future.

Though history often frames her through her marriage, Yang Kaihui carved out her own identity amid the chaos surrounding her. She navigated the treacherous landscape of 1920s China with dignity, witnessing firsthand the violent collision between old and new political forces. Her story embodies the sacrifices demanded by an era of radical transformation—personal lives caught in history’s undertow.

On November 14, 1930, Yang Kaihui’s life ended tragically in Changsha, cut short by gunshot at just twenty-nine years old. Her death came during one of China’s bloodiest periods of political upheaval. Though her years were few, her legacy endured, woven permanently into the historical record of modern China and remembered as a quiet testament to the human cost of revolutionary change.
