Margaret I, Countess of Burgundy

Biography

Born into medieval royalty on January 1, 1309, Margaret I commanded her own destiny in an era when few women held real power. As Countess of Burgundy and Countess of Artois in her own right—titles she inherited through her own bloodline—she wielded considerable authority across two of France’s most strategically important regions during the turbulent fourteenth century. Her dual rule was extraordinary for the time, a testament to her family’s prominence and her own political acumen.

For over seven decades, Margaret I navigated the treacherous court politics and territorial disputes that defined medieval Europe. She witnessed sweeping transformations across her lands while maintaining her grip on power through decades of upheaval and change. Her longevity itself was a feat—living to 73 in an era when survival was never guaranteed.

When Margaret I died on May 17, 1382, France buried her with full honors at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the most sacred necropolis of the realm. That final resting place spoke volumes about her legacy: a noblewoman who had governed territories and shaped dynasties during one of history’s most pivotal chapters. Her seventy-three years left an indelible mark on the medieval landscape she commanded.
