Biography

Hanns Kerrl rose to prominence as Nazi Germany’s Minister for Religion, wielding considerable power over the nation’s religious institutions during one of history’s most turbulent periods. Born in Fallersleben in 1887, Kerrl ascended to a position that placed him squarely at the intersection of state authority and faith—a role that defined much of his public life and remains historically significant for its implications on religious policy during the Nazi era.

Kerrl’s tenure as Minister for Religion positioned him as an influential figure within the Third Reich’s governmental apparatus, tasked with navigating the complex relationship between state ideology and institutional religion. His work during this period continues to be examined by historians studying how totalitarian regimes attempted to control religious life and practice.

He died on December 12, 1941, in Paris, just a day after turning fifty-four. Kerrl was buried at Waldfriedhof Dahlem in Berlin, where his grave remains a marker of a life lived during history’s most consequential chapter.
