Cassandra Austen 1773 – 1845
Biography
Cassandra Austen was born on January 9, 1773, in Steventon, where she spent her early years in the Hampshire parsonage that shaped her and her younger sister Jane. Throughout her life, Cassandra pursued watercolor painting with genuine skill and dedication, leaving behind a body of delicate artistic work that reflected the refined sensibilities of her era. Her artistic eye and creative spirit made her a valued member of her family circle and community.
As the elder sister to Jane Austen, Cassandra occupied a special place in the life of one of England’s greatest authors. The bond between the sisters was notably close, and Cassandra remained Jane’s confidante and steadfast companion through the various seasons of their lives. Though less publicly celebrated than her famous sister, Cassandra’s presence was a constant source of support and affection within the Austen household.
Cassandra lived a long life, remaining in the Hampshire countryside that had always been her home. She spent her final years in Chawton, where she passed away on March 22, 1845, at the age of seventy-two. Her legacy, though quieter than Jane’s, is one of artistic accomplishment, familial devotion, and a life lived with grace and gentle creativity.
