Biography

Arduin of Ivrea was born on January 1, 955, in Pombia, a time of considerable change across the Italian peninsula. He rose to prominence during a turbulent period in medieval Europe, eventually claiming the throne and becoming king of Italy. His life spanned sixty years of significant political transformation, during which he navigated the complex power dynamics of the fragmented Italian kingdoms and the broader Holy Roman Empire.

After a life spent in service to his realm and people, Arduin died on December 20, 1015, in Fruttuaria, a monastic community in northern Italy. His choice to spend his final days in this religious setting reflects the spiritual inclinations that may have guided him throughout his later years. He was laid to rest at Fruttuaria, in what is now San Benigno Canavese, where his remains were interred in the monastery grounds.

Arduin’s legacy endured through his burial place, one of the most significant monastic centers of his era. His reign and life remained part of Italian historical memory, representing an important chapter in the medieval period when regional leaders shaped the destiny of the peninsula.
