Biography

Ivan Aguéli was born on May 24, 1869, in the small Swedish town of Sala, where he would ultimately be laid to rest. Throughout his lifetime, he established himself as a significant figure in Swedish artistic and spiritual circles, becoming nationally recognized for his work as a painter while simultaneously pursuing a deeper spiritual path as a Sufi master.

Aguéli’s dual legacy reflects a life dedicated to both creative expression and inner development. His paintings earned him prominence within Sweden’s contemporary art community, while his commitment to Sufism demonstrated a profound spiritual seeking that extended beyond the canvas. These two dimensions of his character—the artist and the mystic—defined his unique contribution to Swedish culture.

On October 1, 1917, Aguéli’s life was tragically cut short when he was killed in a railway collision in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. His remains were returned to his native Sala, where he was interred at Christina Church, bringing his earthly journey full circle in the place where it had begun. Though his time was finite, Aguéli’s influence as both a painter and spiritual guide left an enduring mark on those who knew his work.
