Biography

Ferdinand Kettler was born on November 2, 1655, in Jelgava, the historic capital of the Duchy of Courland. As a member of the Kettler dynasty, he inherited a legacy of noble leadership in this Baltic region during a period of significant political complexity and change across Eastern Europe.

Throughout his life, Ferdinand served as Duke of Courland, holding a position of considerable responsibility in governing his territories. His reign spanned much of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a time when the Baltic states navigated intricate relationships with neighboring powers and sought to maintain their autonomy and prosperity.

Ferdinand lived a long life by the standards of his era, passing away on May 4, 1737, in Gdańsk at an advanced age. His final resting place was chosen with reverence for his station and legacy: he was interred at Jelgava Palace, in the very city where he was born over eighty years earlier. This choice reflected both his deep connection to Courland and the enduring importance of the palace as a center of ducal power and family heritage.
