Bram Stoker

Biography

Bram Stoker wrote one book that swallowed the world. The Dublin-born writer spent years as theatre manager to the great actor Henry Irving at London’s Lyceum, then poured that world of shadows and spectacle into Dracula in 1897 — creating Count Dracula, the most imitated villain in literature, and setting the rules for every vampire story since. He wrote other novels and stories, but Dracula outlived them all, and him. He died in London on April 20, 1912, at 64, and his ashes rest at Golders Green Crematorium — the man who gave horror its most enduring monster, remembered wherever the sun goes down. Dracula was no overnight success — it sold modestly at first and only became a phenomenon on stage and screen in the decades after his death. He also wrote The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm, but nothing he wrote escaped Dracula’s shadow.
