Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine 1874 – 1878
Biography
Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine entered the world on May 24, 1874, at the Neues Palais, born into one of Europe’s most prominent royal families. Though her life would be brief, she held the dignity and promise that came with her station as a German princess during the height of the Victorian era.
Marie spent her formative years within the walls of the Neues Palais, surrounded by the grandeur and tradition of royal life. In her short time, she was cherished by her family as a symbol of dynastic continuity and hope for the future. The palace, which witnessed both her birth and her childhood moments, became the only home she would ever know.
On November 16, 1878, at just four years of age, Princess Marie succumbed to diphtheria—a disease that claimed countless lives during the nineteenth century, sparing neither the humble nor the royal. Her death, occurring within the same walls where she had been born, marked the end of a young life full of unfulfilled promise. Though her years were few, she remained a remembered member of the Hessian royal line.
