Biography

Louis of Durazzo, Count of Gravina, lived during a pivotal era in medieval Italian nobility. Born on January 1, 1324, he inherited the titles of Count of Gravina and Morrone, positions of considerable influence in the Kingdom of Naples. Throughout his life, Louis maintained his authority over these important territories, navigating the complex political landscape of fourteenth-century southern Italy where family alliances and regional power were constantly contested.

On July 4, 1364, Louis’s life was cut short in Naples when he fell victim to poison—a tragic end that reflected the dangerous world of noble politics in which he lived. His death marked the conclusion of forty years spent in service to his family’s legacy and the governance of his counties. Though his burial place remains unrecorded in historical documents, the memory of Louis of Durazzo endures as part of the broader tapestry of medieval Italian nobility, a reminder of both the privileges and perils that accompanied noble rank during this transformative period in European history.
