Adolf Reichwein 1898 – 1944
Biography
Adolf Reichwein was born on October 3, 1898, in the Rhine town of Bad Ems, Germany. He devoted his life to education, economics, and cultural policy, becoming a significant figure in the Social Democratic Party (SPD). As an educator and economist, Reichwein worked to advance progressive ideas and public welfare during the tumultuous years of the Weimar Republic.
When Nazi tyranny consumed Germany, Reichwein joined the resistance movement, risking everything to oppose the regime. He worked alongside others who believed that resistance was both a moral imperative and a patriotic duty. His commitment to these principles never wavered, even as the Nazi state tightened its grip on the nation.
On October 20, 1944, Reichwein was executed by hanging at Plötzensee Prison in Berlin. He was forty-six years old. His death marked the loss of a courageous educator and principled opponent of fascism—a man who chose conscience over compliance and paid the ultimate price for his conviction that another Germany was possible.
