Adil Shah 1719 – 1749
Biography
Adil Shah ascended to the Afsharid throne as the dynasty’s second king, inheriting a crown weighted with the responsibility of consolidating Persian authority during one of Iran’s most volatile periods. Born into Khorasan’s storied landscape in 1719, he stepped into power at a pivotal moment when the Afsharids were reshaping the political map of the Persian realm following decades of regional upheaval. His sovereignty became the linchpin holding together the dynasty’s ambitious vision for a unified Iran.
Though his reign proved brief—cut short when he died in Mashhad at just thirty years old in 1749—Adil Shah left an indelible mark on the Afsharid legacy. His time on the throne represented far more than a simple succession; it embodied the dynasty’s determination to forge stability and permanence in a landscape fractured by conflict. Today, his grave in Mashhad’s Central District stands as a quiet memorial to a young sovereign whose chapter in Persian history, however brief, helped define an entire era of dynastic transformation.
