Biography

Agustín de Iturbide didn’t just lead Mexico—he crowned himself emperor at a moment when the nation needed a steady hand. Born in Morelia in 1783, this military officer became Mexico’s first constitutional emperor, stepping into power during the chaotic early years of independence. His ascent marked a bold attempt to transform a newly liberated nation into a centralized monarchy, establishing himself as the ultimate authority when Mexico’s political future hung in the balance.

Though his reign proved brief, Iturbide’s fingerprints were all over Mexico’s foundational governance. He worked to consolidate power and build constitutional institutions during a period of profound uncertainty—no small feat for a nation just breaking free from colonial rule. His leadership shaped the young republic’s earliest political moves, establishing precedents that would echo through Mexican history.

On July 19, 1824, Iturbide was struck down by gunshot wound in Nueva Villa de Padilla, a violent end befitting the turbulent era he inhabited. His body was honored with interment at Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, a resting place reserved for figures of towering historical importance. Iturbide’s legacy remains inseparable from Mexico’s birth as an independent nation.
