Biography

Born into Cairo’s glittering golden age, Al-Musta’in rose to become the tenth Caliph during one of Islam’s most pivotal centuries. Ascending to this revered spiritual position in 1406, he commanded the religious authority that made Cairo the beating heart of the Islamic world—a role that transcended politics to touch the souls of believers across the region. His eight-year tenure as caliph cemented his place in the sacred lineage of Islamic leadership during the Mamluk Sultanate’s reign.

Al-Musta’in’s thirty-seven years spanned a transformative era in medieval history, from the waning fourteenth century through the emerging fifteenth. Though his caliphate proved relatively brief, his spiritual stewardship left an indelible mark on Cairo’s religious consciousness during turbulent yet culturally explosive times. He died in Alexandria on January 1, 1430, claimed by plague—the merciless scourge that decimated the medieval Mediterranean world and countless others of his station.
