Biography

Al-Salih Ismail came of age during a transformative period in medieval Egypt, ascending to the sultanate at a remarkably young age. His reign from 1342 to 1345 represented a significant chapter in Mamluk history, a time when the sultanate navigated complex political and administrative challenges. Though his time in power was brief, lasting only three years, Al-Salih Ismail’s leadership during this formative era left its mark on the kingdom he inherited and ruled from Cairo.

Born on January 1, 1325, Al-Salih Ismail came of age within the elite circles of Mamluk society, preparing him for the responsibilities of supreme rule. His youth stood in contrast to the weight of his position, yet he carried the expectations of a vast empire centered in one of the world’s great medieval cities. On August 1, 1345, his life came to an end in Cairo, concluding a reign that, while abbreviated, reflected the dynamic nature of Mamluk governance during the fourteenth century.

The legacy of Al-Salih Ismail endures as part of Egypt’s rich sultanate history, a reminder of the young rulers who shaped the Islamic world during the Middle Ages.
