Albert Canet 1878 – 1930
Biography
Albert Canet was born on April 17, 1878, in London to a family that would become known in French sporting circles. Though he entered the world in England, Canet’s life and legacy became deeply rooted in France, where he would pursue his passion for tennis during a formative period of the sport’s development.
As a competitive tennis player, Canet participated in the athletic culture of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century France. He was active during an era when tennis was establishing itself as a major sport across Europe, and he contributed to the growth of the game in his adopted country. His involvement in French tennis circles reflected the international nature of the sport and the movement of talented athletes across borders during this period.
Canet spent his final years in Paris, residing in the 7th arrondissement until his death on July 25, 1930. His contributions to French tennis, though not extensively documented in modern records, remain part of the sport’s rich history. He was laid to rest at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Ménilmontant, one of Paris’s most prestigious burial grounds, a fitting tribute to a man who had made his home in France and left his mark on its sporting heritage.
