Biography

Born into Ukraine’s turbulent landscape in 1918, Alexander Galich emerged as a dual force in Soviet cultural life—a musician and writer whose work captured the artistic spirit of twentieth-century Europe. His career unfolded during one of history’s most transformative periods, when artists navigated complex social and political currents. Galich’s creative voice, expressed through both performance and the written word, left an imprint on the cultural landscape he inhabited.

Galich’s artistic journey carried him across continents, his talents developing against the backdrop of constant historical upheaval. He carved out a distinctive space in Soviet artistic circles, blending his skills as a performer with his work as a writer. His contributions reflected the rich traditions of his era, even as his life took him far from his birthplace.

On December 15, 1977, Galich’s life ended suddenly in Paris by electrocution. He was laid to rest at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery, the final resting place of countless expatriates seeking refuge abroad. Though his years were cut short, Galich’s dual legacy as musician and writer endures in the cultural record.
