Biography

Born in Finnish Kotka in 1825, Alexander Mozhaysky became one of Russia’s most visionary aerospace pioneers at a time when human flight existed purely in the realm of imagination. While his contemporaries dismissed the possibility of mechanical aviation, Mozhaysky devoted his career to the emerging science, establishing himself as a serious figure in Saint Petersburg’s intellectual circles during the nineteenth century’s explosive technological boom.

Working from Russia’s capital, Mozhaysky pursued innovations that positioned him among the era’s boldest explorers of flight technology. His commitment to advancing aerospace engineering during an age of rapid transformation earned him recognition as a key player in the international race to conquer the skies—a field that would define the following century.

Mozhaysky died in Saint Petersburg on April 1, 1890, at sixty-five, and was buried at Smolenskoye Orthodox Cemetery. His legacy lives on as a cornerstone of Russian scientific achievement and the global quest to make human flight a reality.
