Biography

Alexander Siloti was born on October 9, 1863, in Znamenka, Russia, during a period of great cultural flourishing in his homeland. He devoted his life to music as both a composer and pianist, contributing to the rich artistic traditions of his era. His talents were cultivated during a time when Russian classical music was gaining international recognition, and he became part of that vital creative community.

Throughout his career, Siloti established himself as a skilled musician whose work spanned both performance and composition. As a pianist, he brought the technical mastery and interpretive depth characteristic of the Russian school to audiences, while his compositions reflected the musical sensibilities of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Russia. His dual gifts allowed him to bridge the performer’s and creator’s perspectives.

In his later years, Siloti made his home in New York City, where he continued his musical pursuits. He remained connected to his Russian Orthodox faith and heritage throughout his life. Siloti passed away on December 8, 1945, at the age of eighty-two, leaving behind a legacy in both performance and composition. He was laid to rest at Novo-Diveevo Russian Orthodox Cemetery in Nanuet, New York, a final resting place that honored his lifelong devotion to his faith and cultural traditions.
