Biography

Alexander came into the world on August 24, 1198, in Haddington, a time of considerable change across the British Isles. Born into royal lineage, he would go on to become King of Alba, a realm that occupied much of what we now know as Scotland. His reign, which spanned from 1214 until his death, proved formative for the Scottish kingdom during a pivotal period in medieval history.

Throughout his thirty-five years as monarch, Alexander guided his kingdom through complex political circumstances and territorial considerations. His long tenure allowed for the development of Alba’s institutions and relationships with neighboring powers. He remained actively engaged in the governance of his realm until the very end of his life.

Alexander passed away on July 13, 1249, while on Kerrera, an island off the western coast of Scotland. Though the specific circumstances of his death were not recorded for posterity, his legacy endured beyond his final days. In keeping with his station, he was laid to rest at Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, a place of spiritual significance that honored his memory and his place in the royal succession of Scotland.
