Biography

Alexandre Colonna-Walewski embodied nineteenth-century French political ambition. Born in 1810 to a life of privilege and purpose, he carved out a career devoted to public service during one of France’s most turbulent periods. His decades in politics reflected the complexities of an era reshaping the nation itself, and he remained a committed figure in French affairs throughout his lifetime.

On September 27, 1868, a stroke claimed Walewski in Strasbourg, ending nearly sixty years marked by dedication to his country. His death closed a chapter in France’s political history—one written by a man deeply invested in the ideals he championed through his work.

Today, Walewski rests at Père Lachaise Cemetery, that storied ground where France’s most influential figures are remembered. Among its distinguished tombs, his resting place stands as a quiet testament to a life of service and conviction.
