Biography

Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov carved his legend across seven decades of Russian history, rising from provincial origins to become one of the empire’s most influential soldier-statesmen. Born in 1737, Orlov navigated the treacherous corridors of eighteenth-century power with the cunning and ambition required to survive—and thrive—through Russia’s most transformative era. His dual mastery of military strategy and political maneuvering positioned him at the center of decisions that shaped the nation’s trajectory.

Orlov’s career embodied the golden age of aristocratic influence, when talent and connections could elevate a man into circles of true power. Whether commanding troops or counseling leaders, he proved himself indispensable during decades marked by imperial intrigue, military campaigns, and seismic geopolitical shifts. He witnessed the reign of Catherine I through the dawn of the Napoleonic Wars—a frontrow seat to history’s biggest moments.

When Orlov died on January 5, 1808, at seventy, he left behind seven decades of service to his country. Entombed at the Church of Saint George in the Yuriev monastery, his final resting place reflected the respect earned by a man who had lived through empires and emerged as one of Russia’s most significant figures.
