Alfons Gorbach 1898 – 1972

Biography

Born in 1898 in the Alpine town of Imst, Alfons Gorbach carved out a significant career in Austrian politics during one of Europe’s most turbulent centuries. Rising from his mountain roots, he became a commanding figure in the nation’s political life, navigating Austria through the treacherous interwar years, the upheavals of World War II, and the demanding postwar reconstruction that followed. Gorbach’s steady hand helped guide his country through transformation and renewal during decades when lesser statesmen might have faltered.

His commitment to Austrian public service never wavered, even as the continent convulsed around him. Gorbach remained deeply connected to his homeland and its people, embodying the resilience of his Alpine heritage. In his later years, he settled in Graz, where he stayed engaged with his community until his death on July 31, 1972, at 73. Nearly three-quarters of a century of life meant Gorbach witnessed Austria’s entire modern metamorphosis—and helped shape it.
