Biography

Alfonso of Aragon was born on January 1, 1481, in the Kingdom of Naples, the son of Alfonso II, King of Naples, and his mistress Trogia Gazzela. Though born outside of wedlock, Alfonso carried the distinguished name of one of Europe’s most powerful royal houses during the Italian Renaissance. His early years were marked by the prominence of his father’s reign, a period of significant political activity in the Mediterranean world.

Little is recorded of Alfonso’s personal life or accomplishments during his nineteen years. He lived during a transformative era when the Italian peninsula was shaped by competing dynasties and shifting alliances. His brief existence was set against the backdrop of his father’s kingdom, where power and influence defined the circumstances of nobility.

Alfonso died in Rome on August 28, 1500, at only nineteen years of age. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown to history. Though his life was short and largely undocumented, Alfonso remains a part of the Aragonese family legacy, a young member of a royal lineage that played significant roles throughout medieval and Renaissance Europe.
