Biography

Andrei Tarkovsky emerged from Soviet obscurity to become cinema’s philosopher-poet, a filmmaker who bent the medium toward metaphysics itself. Born in 1932 to humble circumstances, he revolutionized how movies could move—not through plot mechanics, but through time itself, patient camera work, and the weight of memory. His distinctive visual language turned film into meditation, making him one of the most influential yet demanding voices in cinema history.

Beyond the director’s chair, Tarkovsky proved a restless innovator across theatre, opera, and film theory, establishing himself as both artist and intellectual. His work spanned Soviet and Russian productions, each project a philosophical investigation wrapped in stunning imagery. He didn’t just make films; he theorized cinema’s very soul, contributing ideas that fundamentally shifted how the medium was understood.

Tarkovsky died in Paris on December 29, 1986, at 54, claimed by lung cancer while living in exile from his homeland. His final resting place at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery embodied his paradox—a Soviet master buried in France, forever between worlds. Yet his artistic legacy transcends geography, continuing to challenge and inspire filmmakers and thinkers globally.
