Andrew, Duke of Calabria

Biography

Andrew, Duke of Calabria, was born into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful dynasties—the Angevins—destined from birth for the glittering courts of Naples. His title alone marked him as royalty’s elite, a Duke before his teens and a King consort whose very name carried the weight of Mediterranean politics. Though the details of his personal life remain shrouded in the fog of fourteenth-century records, his position reflected the Angevin house’s iron grip on southern Italian power.

Life in Andrew’s world meant responsibility without reprieve. He came of age during the Kingdom of Naples’ most dynamic period, when his family’s influence rippled across trade routes and diplomatic channels throughout the Mediterranean. Yet fate intervened cruelly—Andrew never had the chance to truly command his legacy.

On January 1, 1345, the young Duke died in his birthplace of Aversa at just seventeen, his reign as King consort cut devastatingly short. His body was honored with burial in Naples Cathedral, a final testament to the Angevin dynasty’s enduring prominence. Though Andrew’s years were few, his name remains etched in medieval nobility’s storied annals.
