Anton Faistauer 1887 – 1930
Biography
Austrian modernist Anton Faistauer burst onto the early 20th-century art scene with a revolutionary visual language that bridged tradition and radical innovation. Born in the Alpine foothills of Sankt Martin bei Lofer in 1887, Faistauer would become one of Austria’s most compelling artistic voices, pushing boundaries at a time when European art was in constant upheaval.
Working across painting and design during the tumultuous interwar years, Faistauer captured the psychological intensity and formal daring of his era. His work reflected the restless energy of 1920s Vienna—a city teeming with artistic experimentation and cultural ferment. He died tragically young on February 13, 1930, just one day before his 43rd birthday, leaving behind a body of work that challenged viewers to see modernism not as cold abstraction, but as deeply human expression.
