Anton Mussert 1894 – 1946
Biography
Born in the Dutch town of Werkendam in 1894, Anton Mussert rose to prominence as a polarizing political figure who shaped—and was ultimately consumed by—one of Europe’s darkest chapters. He became a leading voice in Dutch fascist movements during the interwar period, gaining influence as extremist ideology swept across the continent. His political trajectory placed him at the center of debates that would define the Netherlands during its most turbulent era.
Mussert’s life ended as dramatically as it had been lived. On May 7, 1946, just four days shy of his fifty-second birthday, he was executed by firing squad at Waalsdorpervlakte. His death represented not just the conclusion of one man’s controversial life, but a reckoning with the ideological conflicts that had torn Europe apart. Mussert’s legacy remains a complex and contested chapter in Dutch historical memory.
