Arame of Urartu -900 – -843
Biography
Arame of Urartu ruled one of the ancient world’s most formidable mountain kingdoms during a transformative era in the Iron Age. Born in 900 BCE in the Armenian highlands, Arame rose to lead Urartu when the civilization was establishing itself as a dominant regional power in the ancient Near East. Though the millennia have erased many specifics of his reign, his prominence as king speaks to his influence during a crucial period when Urartu was consolidating its strength and expanding its reach across challenging terrain.
Arame commanded his people for fifty-seven years across the rugged Urartian territories until his death in 843 BCE. While history has kept silent on the exact details of his final days and resting place, his legacy endures as part of Urartu’s foundational era—a time when early Iron Age kings like Arame were building the institutional and military foundations that would make their kingdom a force to reckon with in the ancient world.
