Aratus of Sicyon

Biography

Aratus rose from his native Sicyon to become the commanding force behind the Achaean League, the ancient Greek confederation that dominated the political stage of the 3rd century BCE. As strategos—wielding both military command and political authority—he orchestrated the League’s expansion and cemented its power through shrewd diplomacy and battlefield brilliance during one of Greece’s most volatile eras.

For nearly six decades, Aratus maneuvered between rival powers, balancing the League’s independence against the gravitational pull of competing dynasties and foreign threats. His strategic vision transformed a collection of city-states into a cohesive force that rivaled the major powers of the Hellenistic world. Whether through the sword or the negotiating table, he became the architect of Greek unity when fragmentation threatened to consume the peninsula.

His reign ended as dramatically as it had blazed—poisoned in Athens at age 58, his death in 212 BCE silenced one of antiquity’s most consequential voices. Sicyon honored their native son with a heroon, a shrine befitting the statesman who had elevated a minor city-state into a player on history’s grandest stage.
