Archduke Alexander Leopold of Austria 1772 – 1795
Biography
Archduke Alexander Leopold of Austria was born on August 14, 1772, in Florence, Italy, during a time when members of the Habsburg dynasty traveled across Europe’s great cities. As an archduke of Austria, he held an important place within one of history’s most influential royal families, whose influence shaped European politics and culture for centuries.
The young archduke’s life was marked by the privileges and responsibilities of his station, though his time on earth proved brief. He lived during a transformative period in European history, as the continent grappled with changing political landscapes and intellectual movements. Despite his noble birth and position, little detailed record remains of his personal accomplishments or daily life.
Archduke Alexander Leopold died on July 22, 1795, at Laxenburg, a royal residence near Vienna. He was only twenty-two years old. Following the customs of his family and station, he was laid to rest in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, Austria, the traditional resting place of the Habsburgs. His relatively short life remains part of the broader history of the Austrian imperial house.
