Baldwin III, Count of Hainaut 1088 – 1120
Biography
Baldwin III came into the world on January 1, 1088, during a time of significant change across medieval Europe. As Count of Hainaut, he inherited responsibility for one of the Low Countries’ important territories, a region of considerable strategic and economic importance. Though details of his early years remain sparse in historical records, his position as count would have involved governance, military leadership, and the complex diplomatic relations necessary to maintain his county’s standing among neighboring powers.
His tenure as count spanned three decades of the twelfth century, a period marked by the Crusades and shifting power dynamics throughout the region. Baldwin III’s rule coincided with major developments in European feudal politics, yet specific accounts of his accomplishments and decisions have largely been lost to time. He died on June 24, 1120, at the relatively young age of thirty-two, his exact place of death unrecorded by surviving documents.
Baldwin III was laid to rest in Mons, the principal city of his county, a final resting place befitting his noble station. Though his years were brief and historical details limited, he remains part of the long succession of counts who shaped Hainaut’s medieval legacy. He is remembered as one link in the chain of rulers who governed this significant territory during the High Middle Ages.
