Biography

Born in the Tuscan hills during the Baroque’s golden age, Bernardo Pasquini emerged as one of seventeenth-century Italy’s most consequential composers. Based in Rome for his most prolific years, Pasquini crafted intricate, emotionally resonant works that epitomized the complexity and drama of Baroque music. His creative output became instrumental in shaping the Italian musical tradition, influencing both his contemporaries and the generations of composers who followed.

Pasquini’s seventy-plus years spanned a transformative era in European music, and he was there witnessing—and driving—it all. Working at the intersection of innovation and tradition, he helped define what Baroque composition could be, leaving behind a substantial catalog that reflected the sophistication audiences craved during this revolutionary period.

When Pasquini died in Rome in November 1710, the city lost a towering figure in its musical landscape. Buried at the venerable San Lorenzo in Lucina church, his legacy persisted long after—a testament to a lifetime spent pushing the boundaries of an art form that would never be quite the same.
